I thought this was America ??

I recently was invited to UC Irvine to watch the documentary film above. I was outraged by what I learned . I would like to introduce you guys to Dr. Sami Al-Arian . He is a Pro Palestinian activist and was a Professor at University of South Florida . He spent a lot of time working on Capitol Hill trying to help the Palestinian people within the system. He as far as I’ve been able to research has always been about trying to find a legal and peaceful solution to the plight of the people of Palestine . He has met with both George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton along with MANY other top level senators and congressmen. He was constantly harassed by the government for his efforts .
After 9/11 in 2003 he was arrested in grandiose fashion and touted as ” The most dangerous Terrorist in America” . They made such a big deal out of it they even had U.S. Att. General John Ashcroft hold a national press conference to claim Dr. Sami was the leader of P.I.J. ( Palestinian Islamic Jihad ) a fact which he has stated was false from the beginning and further stated his condemnation of people who would harm innocent civilians as a way to make their points. He was held for 2 years before he could go to trial . When they finally got to trial Dr. Sami and 4 associates of his were charged with a combined 200+ counts of Terrorism and such . When the trial ended after 13 days of deliberations, the jury acquitted him on eight of 17 counts, while remaining deadlocked 10-2 in favor of acquittal on the other nine. Out of the 200+ charges against the 4 men there was not one “guilty” verdict . When asked what it would have taken to convict these men one of the jurors said “EVIDENCE” ….. Despite being acquitted he was still held without bail . The man was acquitted!!! Why is he still in jail?? The FBI tapped his phone for close to 10 years(not just his calls but his wife and childrens conversations) and had been investigating him for longer and still had not been able to convict him.
Then after 4 years of being kept from his family the government offered him a plea. If he plead guilty to a charge involving him donating to a charity for women and children somehow loosely connected to P.I.J. they would drop the remaining charges and let him go if he left the country. Now if this man was such a “HUGE” threat to the US why would they offer to let him go??????? After being worn down for so many years the Dr. wanted to return to his family so he signed the plea only to have the government illegally break the written agreement . No matter how you feel about the Israel Palestine conflict this man had broken no laws and was acquitted. The system worked but the government is holding this man illegally . He has now been on a hunger strike for nearing 50 days and has been put into solitary confinement for no apparent reason . If you want to see more heres a link to a 55 min. version of the film the version I saw was 2 hours and I am trying to get permission to put the full length up on the website .
Here’s the link…. Click This

This whole notion of terrorism has become yet another ploy by the government to manipulate the people. Post 911 we’ve lost so many of our constitutional rights, we might as well not have a constitution; all in the name of fighting terrorism. From what I understand, now we can be arrested and held without bail, without being charged with a crime and without that one phone call . . . and held indefinitely. Bush really did a number on us. Both of them did.
I’ve said it before; I’ll say it again: Want to get your mind blown? Watch this:

GREAT BLOG! good film.. Land of the free, Ya right… I guess you have to know the right people to be free.

Al-Queda aside, the US government is the only group of people that 9/11 was good for. It’s yet another excuse for them to restrict the rights of honest, decent people. Land of the free indeed.

The things that this administration has gotten away with is beyond appalling to me. I had hoped that after Katrina people would wake up and realize just how far off course our country is. Sadly, time has passed and memories fade along with any outrage people felt at the time, and as long as it’s not their husband or their son being stripped of even the most basic rights that we as Americans are SUPPOSED to have than it’s not “my” problem. Peoples’ indifference is as appalling as the violations to me; I screamed and yelled at the puter when I read this in the same way I did watching American citizens die in their attics and flood waters in NOLA- it’s all just friggin’ WRONG. This IS America and people need to get pissed and do some screaming of your own before it happens to you or someone you know and love! I’m going to try to watch the film, kudos to those who left comments

Reply : I hear you. It’s hard in a time when so many people are suffering from injustice to care about an individual but we got to start somewhere and like I said the American justice system actually worked and declared this man innocent yet the government refuses to accept defeat and free him . My thought process is that I have made some songs on my recent album that could possibly get me locked up too . Being a muslim it is increasingly frightening that free speech seems to have disappeared from the constitution … and when I make it out your way I definitely plan on coming to get me a large steaming cup of your best coffee …. and a danish if you got them …. thanks for always contributing to the blog … 1. The land of Control, The home of the slave… I really feel sorry for the world`s population.. Being in the hands of these corrupt old, greedy men… Lets just hope there is enough fighting spirit left to take our own world back. Keep up your awsome work, Ev. And a warm welcome to Sweden.. That fact is that the elite powers of the world are clamping down on civil liberties day by day month by month year by year its a gradual errosion that will keep chipping away until your left with next to nothing . Over here they are bringing in N.I.C (National Identity Cards) They say to combat terrorism and in the process charge you for the privilage ! I already have a national ID its called a passport and i will fight this all the way to Downing Street i am NOT fucking joking , theres already more CCTV camera”s in Britain than anywhere else in the world , you carnt take a shit without nbeing watched . How the hell will bringing in a card with your name and CHIP ( so they can track your every move) solve terrorism if you ask me it add fuel to its fire as all it will do is breed ignorance . As Sabac Red once said ” If we want peace then why is it so hard to achieve ? ” Its because its in the elites intrest to keep you looking over your shoulder at all times keep you confused but if you look between the lines and the internets great for this ( sites like martyr - inc , George Galloways Respect site , etc etc )you can gain your own truth and it seems many on this site are on the same page . I strongly urge anyone with an intrest in middle eastern politics to buy Goerge Galloways book ” I am not the only one ” and read the chapter about Britain and Americas trade embargo on Iraq prior to the first War . It outlines perfectly how the powers that operate and how they create a climate which fosters fear and misunderstandings . I am not concerned with Islam i am more concerned about the elite of this world and where they are taking us without permission .

You know what? Perhaps it’s my age (the whole wisdom with maturity thing) or our country has actually gotten worse since the end of cold war as far as disinformation or information manipulation. The heck of it is, it is almost impossible to make judgements based on ANY information from our country (side) or the opposing opinion (side). Do you judge based on the side that seems to have the most truth? How do you decide what the truth is? Years of experience in management (corporations, government and family business) has taught me what you’re hearing is what the AUTHOR of the information wants you to hear. (d’oh!) When you are searching for the truth, almost always, all sides have truths. As individuals, we can search for the truths - but rarely do individuals have ACCESS to the needed tools to filter the truth from the hyperbole and the outright lies. H*ll, we’re supposed to believe that our gov’t went to war based on misinformation supplied to our leader and chief. How are we, as individual citizens, supposed to be satisfied with any information fed to us?
—
Be careful about absolutes; the truth lies between the black and the white - in the spectrum of greys. Keep searching; don’t give up because of either frustration or complacency. Keep testing YOUR held truths. This “matured” heart has learned that love and life lives in the greys and not the absolutes of black and white.

Ante up ! I carnt believe ive only just seen that film …..a heartfelt thanks Mayra . Alot of my friends are close minded about such things and sometimes they cold shoulder me when i bring up the subjects that are focused on in the movie its a a wall of apathy that i find hard to deal with . Ive always sided with the Palastinians , which right minded individual wouldnt ? I dont hate Jewish people and respect their right to live where they see fit . But ive always wondered if biblical history and all that goes with it was a front for a higher purpose ? Thank your gods for music thats all can say ………… One

you are all a pretty heartening bunch..when I check in here I am reminded of how important it is that there are powerful and creative intelligences using their skills to continue the attempt of communication between our embattled minds and lives. Civilization is an experiment still in progress, perhaps proving to be impossible to continue, but we can always be good to each other in every moment…we do our best and try not to perpetuate ill will and conflict beyond an appropriate response, defending yourself when necessary…people making confusion to cloud who’s resposibility it might be to keep it together…anyway i am wandering with my thoughts….Danishes…I need to find more pastries, we got killer local cinnamon rolls every day though…hopefully we’ll be doing our own roasting by next year too..fingers crossed…If not I’m outta here…..thanks for the music and the strong necessary creative force and influence you’ve been over these years of recording and performing ev..cheers again

Reply: First off your comment has no merit . Watch the film before you comment on something. He was tried and acquitted. To be honest it sounds like you been sipping to much of that government Kool-Aid bro …. Secondly thats your Commander and Chief not mine …. Bush has been a disaster of GLOBAL proportions …. This has nothing to do with 9/11 except that it’s been used as an excuse to rob us of our so called “rights” …. Don’t trip if you don’t believe it you’ll see it come to fruition soon enough …. Last but not least thanks for commenting and taking part in the blog …. EV

Frightening how our rights are being systematically sacrificed, and as they disappear one by one society seems largely none the wiser. It’s like watching a skilled magician perform an illusion: you know what’s happening but you just can’t see it, and before you know it someone’s being sawed in half, only this time it’s the Constitution. What’s even more frightening is how we’re being spoon-fed gobbledegook in gut-busting amounts on a daily basis and we’re gulping it down with smiles on our faces and asking for more. Thank you, Ev, for sharing your talent with the rest of the world, and thank you for spreading Sami’s story. May you be blessed, my friend.
April 27th, 2008 at 7:24 am
well this IS America… it’s outraging but not surprising at all… If the same government can ignore international law, why would you expect them to respect the law within your country. I don’t see much difference between ignoring UN charter and ignoring the constitution. If they get away with it on international level, no wonder they are doing it at home.

@Mayra: Zeitgeist is cool. I dont know how about part 2 and 3, (cause I am no 911 expert and I am also really stupid at economics to understand that thing about central bank), but I can tell you the part about Jesus is really, really good. Pretty compatible with what I had read on evolution of Christianity - the influence of mithraism and cults of Dionysus and Adonis on early christian comunities… They are not the first one to point out the similarities. I have read a book from like the 50’s where the author proves the Christianity emergered as a syncretism of Judaism, helenistic phylosophy and pagan cults.
Some people blame zeitgeist from parallelomania, but these similarities simply are everywhere… Even in our pre-christian Slovanic mythology, for instance:
our word for christmas carol is “koleda”, which means “incarnation of LEDA”. Leda was a pagan godess of light, but her name also meant “a virgin” in antient Czech. Despite her virginity she was also called “the mother of God” and she was represented with a baby on her knees and the sun between horns over her head. (resembles Egyptian ISIS and Virgin Mary, doesnt she?)
There’s even a story similiar to annunciation. One day, Leda saw a cross floating on water and soon after that a messenger ceme to her and foretold she would have a baby. She asked: “how could I? I have no husband.” And he said: “with a spirit.” That night a spirit came to her and came to life within her body.
SVAROG was another cult of sun. It means “aborning sun” and guess what the symbol of this god was… a cross in a circle! (cool, isnt it?) And the word “krug” means circle, but in some lenguages it also means bread.Brad in these parts of Europe has circular shape and it represents the sun and Svarog, the incarnation of the sun. So ritual eating of bread as the god’s body must have been known to Slavic people before christianity was brought in.
Falcon was another symbol of Svarog. These birds were called KRAGULEC (incarnation of sun) or RAROG (shining sun). I cant help myself, but this reminds me of Egyptian RA or HORUS (not mentioning that there was another Slavic god of sun called CHORS, pronounced as HORS)
Things like these make you realise that religions were made by people, as they were despertely trying to find out what the gods’ thought are. Since all religions come frome people and not from God, none of them can be cosidered more priviledged then the others. I just wish people read more books to realise this…

Because of indifference, one dies before one actually dies.
-Elie Wiesel
I am outraged when any innocent person is imprisoned. I respect the tenants of Islam. It is the silent majority of moderates within the religion, those who have no outrage over the way their religion has been hijacked by extremists and the way Muslim women are being egregiously misstreated, that I take issue with.
I applaud those who are outraged over the illegal imprisonment of a man whose crime seems to be being an intellectual. I just wonder where the outrage is for the sake of the countless women who are, have been, and will likely continue to be nailed down by their burqas due to their expunged rights as human beings.
Where’s that song?
Peace.
April 27th, 2008 at 11:59 am
I respect everyones right to believe in what they feel in their own hearts but i feel in my and in my head that religion is another tool of mass control , i mean look at the mind set of devout followers , look at fundamental christians . I have a friend who is born again and if i played him the section on Jesus he would freak out and that would be the last id hear from him in a while . Its like these people get so brainwashed that they develop tunnel vision . To me its so simple as to be an absurd question as i genuinely believe in 500 years people will look back at history and think ” What ! They believed what ! ” I really do .

Nadia, that’s fascinating! I had always known that Christianity was built around pagain holidays so that everyone would, in a way, be forced to celebrate those dates (i.e. Christmas and Easter/solstice and equinox), but the sheer volume of how many religions shared the same basic facts–virgin birth, mother named Mary (or some derivative), 12 apostles, died and ressurected three days later–was simply mindboggling. . . and the fact that these belief structures can be documented 2000 years before christ is even more astounding.
Part 2 of Zeitgeist, the 911 conspiracy, is stuff I’ve heard before, but with a little more spice. I don’t agree with some of what’s in that movie: That there were explosives in the twin towers, for instance; when they collapsed, it did not look like a controlled demolition to me. Tower 7, however, looked very much like a demolition, and there’s no reason it should have gone down in the first place. But the fact that their sources can be varified, is what I appreciate about this movie. I don’t believe things just because I’m told or “everyone says so”. I need proof, and this movie offers a lot of it.
But, despite the stuff I have my doubts on, the rest of that what I heard in that movie was frightening. Why aren’t we all screaming in outrage? Countries have had revolutions for less reasons than these, and the Bush administration knows it, hence the Patriot Act. But you’re right, Nadia. If the American government breaks all the UN laws and agreements, what’s to keep them kosher at home?
April 28th, 2008 at 5:06 am
It doesn’t take much for someone to be deemed “a person of interest” aka terrorist, in this country. I flew with a friend of mine to San Diego back in 2004 and their name just happened to be similar to someone on a terrorist watch list. Ever since, the last 14 flights I’ve taken, I’ve been ‘randomly’ searched 9 times. It’s not that I call attention to myself by wearing traditional long clothing or a hijab.
It happens simply because of that one trip to SD. When my friend was asked by airport security if he was traveling alone, he innocently replied “no” and stated we were travelling together. It’s pretty safe to assume that my name now appears on a watch list otherwise, these intrusive searhes would never occur. I have complained about this as I believe it is racial profiling. However, in the name of national security, many feel it’s justified and my concerns have fallen on deaf ears.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:27 am
Terrifying..I agree that the terrorist hunt has gone too far. And the power of media is too big, especially if it’s controlled by Bush administration.
By the way, if Henry Rollins is still doing his talkshow, “Henry Rollins Show”, I think that you , Ev, should make a call and go there as a guest. It would be interesting because you have kinda same point of view to things, you two would have a lot to talk about Bush and US!
I’ve watched his show and I’ve gotta say that Henry has strong opinions and is truly an intelligent person.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Sahar, the same thing happened to my father. He was a private investigator, never been arrested, never part of any “suspicious activity” or groups, but yet his name was flagged, too. Every single time he’d fly he’d get pulled aside and thoroughly searched. He had even missed connections because of it. He said there was a code on his plane ticket that alerted the airport personnel to stop him for searching. He figured it was just that he had the same name as a “person of interest”, and that might be so. I’ve heard of babies being stopped and searched because their names matched some sort of airport black list. It could also have been his frequent trips to Puerto Rico, or maybe because he worked for the defense, helping get people out of jail. We’ll never know, but it could happen to any of us.
Besides, do any of the security changes make any sense at all? You can’t take nail clippers on a plane, but you’re allowed to take something like up to 5 books of matches (even though planes are nonsmoking now). I swear, the whole government is oxymoronic.

Are you all really surprised about this happening? I must admit, I´m not, after all we ad to learn about Guantanamo f.e.. But I´m pretty sure, there´s hundreds more rotting in american jails without any reasonable cause. But as they are not as famous as Prof. Sami they have noone, who would fight for them.

Forgive me if I don’t take your moralizing completely seriously here, germangirl. It isn’t about countries being better than others; it’s about recognizing and remedying the strain of injustice that, unfortunately and historically, has threaded through many a government at the expense of human rights and lives. We all have a long way to go. As the saying goes, “The world is watching.” And yet, the hard truth is this: It is also hiding.
Peace.
April 29th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Injustices are everwhere and we all have our battles.
Mine is pharmaceuticals vs healthy solutions for diseases. Too many cures and therapies are hidden to make sure as many people as possible take a lot of drugs. The pharmaceutical mafia is run by the same people you guys are talking about. Why do we test our vaccine on poor people in Africa? Why does stressed people take pills instead of exercising and being educated to breath? Why do we spend all this money on chemo who was invented to poison rats? Why does our doctor recommends Zantac when we can’t digest our supersize combo at McDonalds? What about healthy food? We are also brainwashed to stay sick so that the same people selling guns and imprisonning innocent people can drive their luxury car ans take their kids around the world at our expense.
Guys, this is my fight… Please be conscious of what you eat and pills you take. For me, this is the most outrageous attack to our population. Doctors use their power and reputation to brainwash us because they are bribed by pharmaceutical companies.
Don’t get me wrong; there are good doctors out there, medicine have made progress with openheart surgeries and stem cells technology but it is the pharmaceutical industry I am mad at. Like war, innocent people die everyday because they took drugs that were not for them. Kids are left alone because their mom is addicted to pain killers that are prescribed by their doctors and therefore LEGAL! And what pisses me off even more is that they are killing all knowledge from ancient medicine (ayurvedic, tibetan, arabic…) that would REALLY help and they are everywhere with their publicity and scary threats. Why do you think birdflu apocalyptic epidemic threat was born? Hell ya! They did!
Please be responsible for your own health, ask questions, read, eat healthy and most importantly, listen to Everlast, La Coka Nostra music for mental health!
And I really wanted to say that I am sooo impressed by the respect on this blog for people’s opinion, we are discussing pretty hot subjects here and I am touched by the respectful and openminded messages.
Namaste
April 30th, 2008 at 1:26 am
@Mayra,”the sheer volume of how many religions shared the same basic facts”
Well yeah, it’s amazing how universal and ubiquitious some concepts of human culture are. Like the day Thursday is dadicated to god of thunder or planet Jupiter in so many languages
English: Thusrday, German - Donnerstag = day of Thor - god of thunder
Spanish: jueves, Italian: giovedi = day of Jupiter - planet and god of thunder
Old Slavic: perenden = day of Perun - god of thunder
Sanskrit: guruvaar = day of planet Jupiter
and it’s the same with other days - actually the whole week is pretty astrological.
Or how about baptism- it is also an old concept, that can be traced to 3rd milenium b.c., when the cult of water in Mesopotamia emerged. It has permeate many cultures since then. Before appearing in christianity it had been known in Egypt and also some jewish sects, one of the most famous was sect of Essenes. (Some scholars even believe that Jesus and John the baptist were Essenes, as there are many similarities, like the baptism, having twelve leaders in their communitiy, eating the supper together and blessing the the wine and bread before eating(like at the last supper), and the echatology - Essenes believed that their teacher, who has been crucified would come back and save them…)
So in the past people had strong connection with the nature and things like stars, planets, water or thunders had sacred meaning and the references to them lasted throughout centuries, it’s just that people forgotten the original meaning.
April 30th, 2008 at 1:35 am
@ Genevieve: well…in some parts of the world people are oversaturating themselves with food and drugs, while in others people are dying from hunger and ridiculous diseases as they cant afford basic drugs. Farmaceutical concerns know that selling Viagra and Valium in western countries makes them more money then providing cheap antituberculotics to third world countries, so why should they encourage someone to live healthily? Let them eat whatever they want, let them smoke and stress out in their jobs so that they cant get it up at the age of fourty and rich men can be richer…
April 30th, 2008 at 2:52 am
@ Sandra: I wneither wanted to moralize not to judge, about any country being “better” than the other. My post was a bit mistakeable here, I think. But it seems to me, tha people in germany try to be aware of injustices like that and I hope, that cases like Prof. Samis at least would outrage the broad public.
April 30th, 2008 at 2:56 am

I hope that makes sense. My German is not nearly as good as your English…obviously.

Thought this was pretty informative when applied to the broader spectrum of things, part of an article written by Adam Zagorin for TIME.com: Gitmo’s Court Wrangling Begins__Guantanamo’s former chief prosecutor, is expected to testify that Gordon Englund, the Deputy Secretary of Defense and the Pentagon’s second-highest civilian, told him last year, “We need to think about charging some high-value detainees because there could be strategic value before the [November] election.” Davis is also expected to repeat, as he has in court filings, that the Defense department’s former top lawyer, general counsel William Haynes, informed him, “We can’t have acquittals [at Guantanamo]. If we’ve been holding these guys for so long, how can we explain letting them get off? We’ve got to have convictions.” (end quote)
Sounds as though it’s all pretty cut and dry doesn’t it?
