Coachella Fest & The Dirty Hands Caravan

pig

So after the Dallas show I’m at the Airport when I get tapped on the shoulder. Low and behold it’s my boy Sean Penn. We get to talking and I tell him I’m trying to get down to Coachella to see Prince and Roger Waters . He then Tells me he’s headed down rto the festival for a project he’s spearheading called the “Dirty Hands Caravan”

Needless to say we made plans to hang throughout the weekend and I must say it was a blast . It’s been a long time since I went to a concert never mind a festival as an observer only. Prince was amazing unfortunately Sat. night I didn’t have the camera charged. But the absolute highlight of the weekend was definitely Roger Waters . He played every conceivable hit then took a break and came back to play “Dark Side of the Moon in it’s entirety … plus an encore of “the Wall” & “Comfortably Numb” . I was floored and also volunteered to help the Caravan …. here are some flicks from sunday at Coachella …. Oh yeah I forgot to mention that graffitti Legend Slick and our own Danny Boy were tapped to paint the giant inflatable Pig for Rogers show Peep Game …..

Sounds amazing. Comfortably Numb is my song. I can’t hear it without thinking about my pops (probably the whole Sopranos/Christopher/car crash thing).

There is no pain, you are receding.
    A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon. . .

When I was a child I saw a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look and it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now,
The child is grown, the dream is gone.

Gives me chills. To hear it live would probably have been way too much for me.

Love the writing on the pig “Don’t be led to the slaughter.”

I guess I’ve been under a rock for the last nine years because I had never heard of Coachella until I read about it on the internet recently.

That is absolutely awesome; not a huge Prince fan, but that’s a helluva combo. Roger Walters is genious-while Ev is continuously blasting away in my head, Floyd is blasting away in the hubbies’. Wish You Were Here is my personal fave & Dark Side takes me back to trips of younger years…long, beautiful trips that would last for days! :D Damn! I must remind myself envy is a sin ;) Major kudos to you for pledging your time when it’s at such a premium right now- and Sean Penn is the man for that job!(The Dirty Hands Caravan) I was so impressed with him going to NOLA and wading thru that fucking cesspool to help rescue people when the friggin’ feds were sitting on their fat, rich asses sending text messages to one another. Not afraid to get his hands dirty, by any means. Literally or figuratively. In reference to a reply you left on the previous post “My thought process is that I have made some songs on my recent album that could possibly get me locked up too .” I imagine your comrade Mr. Penn has had to wonder about his ‘freedom’ status more than once over the last few years, given his outrage and outpspokenness toward the current administration. The mans’ got a set as big as the state of Texas, so far as I can tell. LOL Bookoo kudos to the both of you, give ‘em hell. Props to Danny Boy & Slick for some killer taggin’! Much love and respect from Indy :D

I just wonder where people get those huge inflamable pigs… Ive been wanting one since i have seen a similar pig in one of the Simpsons episode :-)

  6. nadia Says:

lol, I mean, iflatable, huhu :-)

  7. Shannon Chapel Says:

“The Dirty Hands Caravan is the coming together of individuals who will be encouraged to get involved by building houses for the homeless, protesting the War in Iraq while supporting the needs of veterans and their families, caring for the sick or needy, cleaning up parks or neighborhoods across America, taking part in clean water initiatives for foreign lands or engaging in whatever way they feel compelled to help others.” I mean, who the hell could possibly have anything negative to say about that! Oh, I’m sure there’s some jackass out there who will, but at least these people are doing SOMETHING! I am so jealous! I wish I could afford to take some time off to get involved with something like this. I work as a registered nurse to pay the bills and a freelance writer (essays, poetry, short stories, travel articles, etc.) for fun…but what I wouldn’t give to be able to do something like the Dirty Hands Caravan or Doctors Without Borders or something else so incredibly worthwhile. Awesome!

  8. Shannon Chapel Says:

Oh, and the opportunity to hear Waters sing all those great old Floyd tunes live would be pretty awesome, too. :-)

  9. germangirl Says:

I think the Dirty Hands Caravan is a very good idea and I hope, that many young people are encouraged to volunteer that way.
And I wish I could have seen Waters, too. His tunes thrill me since the early 80´s.

Comfortably Numb, great song and best guitar solo ever! I wonder if it works without David Gilmour?

very nice…all around. i spent most of the past year volunteering in a drop-in center for folks w/ MH issues…is was a great way to spend one’s time giving back to society. i think it’s awesome that Sean Penn is looking to spur a movement such as this.

  13. faith Says:

…& the festival sounds as though it was a good time!

  14. DVS Says:

Nice tag, Danny Boy. Roger Waters is a excellent musician, and Pink Floyd
I’ve always wanted to see live. Prince I’ve seen before, and he always delivers a good show still. Looks like you guys had a blast. Was RATM there as well ? Any luck on the propoganda packs yet.

    Much Respect.

  15. Chris Says:

Amazing, Coachella is the best, we started going about 7 years ago…best festival in so cal

  16. henchman Says:

I heard Danny nearly had a bad doo because of heatstroke ? Can never be to carefull under the desert sun . Pink Floyd even if its just Roger Waters on his own is a good enough reason to upsticks and attend , i grew up listening to them amongst many through our kid who was / is a massive Floyd fan they aswell as Cream and many others could often be heard banging out through our old house quickly followed by my mum screaming ” Turn it down ” que total ignorance !

  17. Andy Says:

Does Sean Penn work out like everyday or something?

  18. Muthagoose Escobar Says:

    Great Images… Thanks for Sharing!

  19. CCinIndy Says:

@ Andy; If I had to guess, I’d say at least twice a day! :)

  20. screwy Says:

    damn, that`s what i call fun :)

  21. nadia Says:

lol… I have been googlin where those pigs come from (I hope I am not outraging any old Pink Floyd fan for not knowing this)… so if anyone else was curious: Waters has designed the original pig himself and when he left Pink Floyd, he wanted the band to pay for each time they would use the pig at their live shows… The other band members didnt want to pay so they changed the pig’s sex and they were like: no, we’re not gonna pay - this ain’t the same pig you have designed, our pig has testicles :-)
ROFL, what a briliant solution of copyright violation issues… just add testicles!
